6 Reasons Why You Should Get Your Scare On at Halloween Horror Nights™ 2017

Do you think you can handle it?
By: Deni Ricci

The terrors of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights 2017 have only just begun. Endless nights of screams and gruesome creatures await you.

We teamed up with Senior Editor of Rotten Tomatoes Grae Drake to hit the streets of Universal Studios Florida and get the inside scoop from fans on the best horrors at this year’s event.

1. Piercing Screams (And Laughter!)
Screaming and Lauging Guests Yes, you will jump and scream from the scares. But one of the best feelings is the laughter that follows with your friends. Or if you’re like me, laughing at your friend’s expense. Everyone needs a scare buddy.

2. Nine Haunted Houses
OC Scare House Shot From the biggest names in pop culture and horror to the original stories birthed from the twisted minds of our Creative team, this year’s haunted houses are some of the strongest in the event’s history.

3. Hellish Fiends and Creatures Lurk
Orignal Content Scareactor From Festival Some of the most iconic—and gruesome—characters and creatures of horror have been brought to life at this year’s event. If your courage doesn’t fail you, snap a photo with your favorite in the streets.

4. Murderous Scarecrows
Scarecrow Speaking of hellish fiends… the top rated haunted house of the event is Scarecrow: The Reaping. Picture this: You in an abandoned farmhouse, surrounded by cornfields, and a horde of killer scarecrows focused on you.

5. Taking It to the Streets
Aliens In Invasion Don’t believe in aliens? You will after you brave Invasion!, one of the five themed scarezones (and my personal favorite) that have taken over the streets.

6. Chainsaws
Chainsaw There are also roaming hordes of murderous clowns with chainsaws… enough said.

Top 6 Things Your Halloween Party Won’t Have

By: Melissa Baumgaertner

A Halloween party at home can’t compete with the gloriously gruesome and horrifying experience Universal Studios Florida puts on. Why? Because Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights creates creepy environments and scares that you can’t provide, nor would you want to, at your typical house party.

Here’s why you should change your plans to attend Halloween Horror Nights 2017:

6. A guest list including limb trimmers, blood thirsty senior citizens, make out queens and your (of course) your ex-boyfriend.

Halloween Horror Nights™ 2017 Merchandise Has Us Freaking Out

By: Mollie Collins

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights is sneaking up. And as it gets closer, we’re excited to share some of the new merchandise items that will be available at this year’s event.

Each item boldly displays the Halloween Horror Nights 2017 logo, giving the entire set a sense of unity—and also making it really hard to just buy one thing.

I just had to find out the backstory behind the incredible colors and detail in this year’s design, so I talked to the man behind the merch himself, Executive Creative Director of Merchandise and Global Licensing at Universal Parks, Brian Beauregard.

Halloween Horror Nights 27 Tshirt Merch

What was the inspiration behind this year’s logo-centric design?
The concept was really driven by this year’s theme, Festival of the Deadliest. This is a theme we’ve been chatting about for a long time and was initially inspired by some artwork we did for a “Titans of Terror” campaign for Universal Studios Hollywood.

Halloween Horror Nights 27 Mug Shot Glass Merch

What does the creative process for Horror Nights merchandise look like?
This year, we were able to come up with sketches and renderings very easily because we had dialed in the concepts so early on and already had the image in our heads for so long.

We partnered very closely with Entertainment and Marketing to assure the overall theme was visually seamless for all departments. From day one. We started in February concepting the “Festival of the Deadliest” aesthetics you see like the candles, skulls, bones, bright colors and different ambiances inspired by the overall thematic for the event. This process takes sketch after sketch to finally dial it down to the illustration and design theme you see now.

We then share the piece of key art and possible variations with all departments to make sure a cohesive story is being told. We work very closely with our Food and Beverage team, taking the artwork and theming it all the way down to creating logos for the event drinks.

Halloween Horror Nights 27 Lanyard Pin Kaychain Merch

What is new and different about this year’s merchandise?
This year, we haven’t just created t-shirts, but have pushed the boundaries of fashion. These are not just your basic tees. There is a lot of sculpting in the graphic, giving dimension to the actual products.

Also new this year was getting to meet with the Academy of Villains show team and collaborate. You will not only see pieces of our key art in show visuals but you’ll also be able to purchase a unique piece of show merchandise we created together and push the boundaries of screen printing using UV inks.

Halloween Horror Nights 27 Socks Hat Merch

What can fans expect at the merchandise store?
Similar to last year, the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute store will be next to Revenge of the Mummy in the New York Area of Universal Studios Florida. But this time, it’ll be themed for Festival of the Deadliest. Walking into the store, which will be open on September 15, will feel similar to going into a crypt, with lots of skulls and candles throughout illuminating the merchandise.

What is your favorite piece of merchandise this year?
Luis Orazi, Senior Designer, is responsible for the main key art and overall look of the artwork. My favorite piece of merchandise is the Event tee. I truly think this is the best illustration we’ve had for Halloween Horror Nights and showcases Luis’s amazing talents. The blend of colors really pulls together all the elements of the Festival of the Deadliest.

Four Horrific Original Houses Revealed for Halloween Horror Nights™ 2017

It's time to attend the Festival of the Deadliest.

By: Charles Gray

Welcome back to the Halloween Horror Nights campfire. In the distance, we hear the call of The Festival of the Deadliest. As opening night closes in, the call grows stronger, drawing us all into its seductive grasp. The chilling celebration of blood and bone is about to begin.

It is time to unleash the Original Houses and the secrets they contain. So gather ‘round the campfire for our final chilling stories.

Scarecrow: The Reaping
Since the great dustbowl, an abandoned farmhouse stands in Nebraska. The bountiful fields ravaged by the farmers’ plows have spurred anger in the Land. Scarecrow guardians have risen from the blood soaked soil to seek revenge. The harvest that will be reaped this season is you.

We’re huge fans of those little-known 1980s horror movies, and we wanted to make you feel as if you’re in those movies. The story takes everything that is sexy, beautiful or cool about vampires and flushes it down the toilet. These Nosferatu are nasty, animalistic, and vicious. It’s the type of house that will make you cling to your date all the way to the exit…if you make it that far.

Dead Waters
We have had houses that later became scare zones in the streets of Universal Studios Florida. This is one of the first times, in recent memory, that a scare zone has influenced a house. For Halloween Horror Nights 24, we had the Bayou of Blood scare zone. It was so strong in character and story that we had to revisit its story again.

We’re excited to have you explore the Dead Waters of the Voodoo Queen and her hellish realm. Trust me…you’ll freak out when you see the half sunken riverboat and the skeletal remains of her victims close in.

The Fallen
It’s the ancient battle between good and evil. The Fallen are flying, jumping, and crawling up from the kingdom of darkness and laying waste to all who cross their path of destruction. These creatures are awesome…and yes, I did say flying. This house is a mix between beauty and decay, high screech and deep roar, and delivers more surprises than I can fit in this paragraph.

These stories are just the beginning. They only lack one thing—you. Come and be a part of these tales before the firelight dies out and we are plunged into darkness. The Festival of the Deadliest is almost here…and it’s enticing lights are pulling us to our wondrous doom.

Get your tickets now and come be a part of the celebration of blood and bone. You know you want to (Cue evil laughter). more

Sinister, Insidious and The Purge Come to Halloween Horror Nights™ in One Terrifying Haunted House

Enter the Horrors of Blumhouse.

By: Charles Gray

What’s better than going through a haunted house based on your favorite horror film? How about going through one based on over five films from three of horror’s darkest franchises. This fall, the multiple films of Sinister, Insidious, and The Purge are coming to life at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights.

Blumhouse Productions is responsible for producing some of the creepiest movies over the last two decades. There is a wealth of content to use and we’re packing every inch of the house with something invasive, something wicked, and something that wants our souls…something altogether Blumhouse.

The advantage to creating a house with multiple properties living inside its decaying walls is each scene is a completely different world. What tie the scenes together are the otherworldly themes that run in all of the films. The characters that roam the house are terrifying yet gorgeous in design. From Bughuul (Mr. Boogie) and to the Red Faced Demon, you’ll get the chance to see them face-to-face. We’re ripping the most terrifying scenes out the creepiest movies from the Blumhouse vault and dropping you into the middle of the action.

What excites me most about this house is the access we were granted to use and recreate elements of Insidious: Chapter 4. That’s right, you’ll be walking through a living trailer of the upcoming film. Insidious: Chapter 4 doesn’t hit theaters until 2018, so this is a big deal for us and the guests who will meet the newest villain of the franchise. I can’t give anything away yet, but I will say that we dive into the Further and see some very horrific…imagery.

What are you looking forward to seeing? Head here for more Halloween Horror Nights details and ticket options. more

Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of Eli Roth's Halloween Horror Nights™ TV Ad

Get a look inside the scares

By: Doug Boemler Wareing

I have a simple rule of thumb: the more fire on set, the better the shoot is going to be. And Eli Roth did not let me down.

A few months back, I had the opportunity to join the cast and crew of this year's epic Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights TV commercial. At the helm was Hollywood filmmaker Eli Roth, director of the Hostel horror franchise and the soon-to-be-released blockbuster Death Wish.

To watch the Behind-the-Scenes and Director's Cut video click here. ** WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT. The following material is not intended for viewers under the age of 17.

The story follows a group of four friends who are headed to a Halloween party that they've heard is pretty special. They arrive and find a host of people dressed in amazing costumes. But as they start to mingle, they realize that something seems a little off...

Did that guy really just saw a woman in half?

And are those vampire girls really feeding on this guy's arms?

But before they can look much further, a mysteriously seductive woman beckons them upstairs. And that is where things really start to get weird.

But I can't ruin the ending now, can I!? Check out the video, hear from Eli himself, and find out what happens to our intrepid party-goers.

It's the perfect thing to get you in the mood for going to Halloween Horror Nights. Grab your tickets and see if you'll survive the terrors that await you... more

Trick ‘r Treat and The Purge to Haunt the Streets of Halloween Horror Nights™

5 killer scare zones and the return of Academy of Villains.

By: Blake Braswell

There is one aspect of Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights no one can escape... the SCARE ZONES. They're the first and last things you'll experience, and it's our chance to make sure there is no way to hide from the scares.

This Halloween Horror Nights, we're inviting you to join the celebration of blood and bone at what can only be called The Festival of the Deadliest – an ancient tradition from the depths of where nightmares are born.

A gathering of the most unearthly, hellish terrors has emerged from the darkest corners of despair. It calls to those who long for the thrill of the scare and wish to have their fears made real. You'll be drawn like moths to a flame, and once you join this hallowed celebration, your nightmares will never end.

You'll find the heart of the Festival on the streets of Hollywood in Universal Studios Florida, but its claws have spread throughout Horror Nights. Here's what awaits you every night...

Trick 'r Treat
First up, it's time to make sure everyone understands the rules of our haunted holiday. Get a proper Halloween education in our Central Park scare zone inspired by the film Trick 'r Treat. We're excited to have Sam visit and make sure we follow the rules of Halloween.

As a longtime fan of classic horror anthology films, Trick 'r Treat is a favorite of mine that pays perfect homage to that genre. In this zone, you'll have the opportunity to come face-to-face with several characters from the film, and learn for yourself what happens when you don't follow the rules.

The Purge
Next up, we have a returning story to our New York streets with The Purge. This time, our approach was to create a zone that showed how we think the events of a Purge night might play out in our streets.

There are some fan favorites returning such as our auction and a very polite gentleman. We also have some new surprises in store. For example, how do you clean up all the mayhem on the streets during a Purge night? Visit the cleanup crew with their trusty wood chipper to find out. Just don't get too close...

Altars of Horror
Near the front gate, on Avenue of the Stars, we have our Altars of Horror. For me, this zone is very exciting because we're bringing something to the streets for our horror fans that we have never done before.

In this zone, we're taking some of the larger than life characters featured in this year's houses, and letting them have their own scare zone. A lot of work goes into bringing these iconic film characters to life in our houses. Now you'll have the opportunity to get an even better look at them.

Set in a time decades ago, our docks in San Francisco find themselves the victim of an INVASION! Visitors from far beyond have crashed their vessel, and are now wreaking havoc on the streets of San Francisco.

They aren't just here to destroy; these invaders are also on a mission to learn everything they can about us humans. Careful, or you may find yourself on the experiment table at the mercy of an alien scientist.

Roaming Hordes
Lastly, no Halloween Horror Nights would be complete without roaming hordes. This time, it's the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the chainsaw. Unhappy with how popular culture has made clowns scary, this grotesque gang of gigglers has risen from the grave, determined to show the world that if you want scary clowns, they're going to make sure you get your worst nightmare.

But wait! There's more. The question is, "can you handle more?" I'm happy to share ACADEMY OF VILLAINS: AFTERLIFE will be returning to put on an all-new killer performance. This group of powerhouse artists will make you bear witness to what happens after we leave this life. They're going to give you one mind-blowing and shocking dance performance that will escort you from this world to the great beyond.

As you can see, the streets will be alive with plenty of horror, mayhem, and celebration. The opportunity to bring favorite horror films to life and tell our own unique horror stories makes every day a thrill. My favorite part of the event is walking the streets each night as our scare actors make these terror-filled tales a reality. Every scream I hear puts a huge smile on my face.

Pick up your tickets today—I'll see you out on the streets! more

Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure 2017: The Farewell Tour

By: Jason Horne

Bill and Ted are ready to rock at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights before they move on to their future adventures. After 26 years of Excellent Halloween Adventures, these pop-culture icons are bringing their Farewell Tour to Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights™. Party on as the phone booth lands one more time at Universal Orlando.

Over the years, this show has morphed and shifted to fit with the changing tides of pop-culture. But at its heart, it has remained true to its nature. The Wyld Stallyns, from San Dimas—and their time-travelling phone booth—find themselves in the middle of pop-culture-parody chaos and must somehow save the world yet again.

But now the time has come for these most outstanding dudes to find adventure in other places and other times.

On a personal note, I've had the pleasure and privilege of writing for and directing Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure for the past 7 years. It goes without saying that this show means a lot to me. Working on Bill and Ted's has become one of the most enjoyable parts of my year—and they have meant a lot to so many people.

Since 1992, hundreds of talented individuals have worked on its production and numerous performers have graced its stage. It also means a lot to the fans. Wyld Stallyn fans are loyal, supportive and the central reason the boys have had so many adventures.

The "Farewell Tour" gives us the perfect opportunity to give Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted "Theodore" Logan a proper sendoff. This year's show is everything you'd expect from Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure. It's relevant. It's ridiculous. It's irreverent. It's edgy. And at the end of the day... it's just a good time.

Years from now, we'll look back at all of the unrestrained joy this show provided for so many of us. And honestly, there may never be anything quite like it again.

So, join us this Halloween. We'll laugh. We'll dance. We may shed a tear or two. We'll take with us some most triumphant memories.

And we'll never forget Bill and Ted's simple mantra which still rings true today—"Be excellent to each other." more

SAW: The Games of Jigsaw Coming to Halloween Horror Nights™

We want to play a game

By: Patrick Braillard

Jigsaw is back

Just writing those words makes me smile. I cannot believe that it has been 8 years since the last time that the SAW franchise was a part of Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights.

Jigsaw's return in our brand new haunted house—SAW: The Games of Jigsaw—allows us to place our guests into the twisted situations that fans of the film series have grown to love throughout the years. And while there are nods to the Halloween Horror Nights 19 house, make no mistake: this is not that house.

During concept, we were very excited to examine the evolution of Jigsaw in the new film and how that might affect the guests' experience- *Spoiler alert: You'll be part of a living preview of a trap featured in the new film JIGSAW coming out Oct. 27. Go. See. It.

Also, placing the house in a different location this time around gave us another way to elevate the scares. SAW: The Games of Jigsaw functions as one large trap. You'll be funneled through claustrophobic, visceral experiences and be a part of the most terrifying "games" ever devised on screen. Trials that you may be familiar with and some that are completely unknown to you— sounds fun.

The game has changed. Evolved.

And it's a game we can't wait for you to play. Grab your tickets now for Halloween Horror Nights. more

Ash vs Evil Dead Brings the Battle of a Lifetime to Halloween Horror Nights™

By: Patrick Braillard

"Alright, you Primitive Screwheads, listen up!"

I am thrilled to announce that Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights™ is partnering with the STARZ original series Ash vs Evil Dead this haunt season. As fans of the series (and of course the earlier films), all of us on the Creative team have been waiting years to bring this title to Halloween Horror Nights™.

"Okay, uhh...obviously I know exactly what's going on but, for the sake of these people, maybe you should explain."

When developing a new haunt experience based on one of your favorite movies/shows/etc., different challenges may arise. Creatively as a team, we want to give you, the fans, the best experience possible while still embracing the authenticity to the movie/show. I feel that this house lives up to the stories found within the Ash vs Evil Dead series, and isn't that what every fan wants to say?

We're going to take you, regardless of your awareness of the show or the characters, and throw you into the loud, brash, and very bloody world of Ash. There are Deadites to kill and evil to stop, let's get to it.

...with stops in Choke-lahoma City and Die-ami..."

The house will feature various locations from the first two seasons of Ash vs Evil Dead and lots of blood. And for those “in the know,” the answer is yes...We'll be going back to the cabin; with a few other surprises along the way.

"What? You never saw a guy with a chainsaw hand before?"

This is our blood-soaked, milk-eyed, crass, rock n' roll amped, chainsaw-wielding felt puppet, love-letter to everyone and everything connected to Ash vs Evil Dead.

"Hey, Granny! I hope you took your Geritol. It's time to dance!"

It's time to start daydreaming of chainsaws revving (if you're not already) and grab your tickets now for Halloween Horror Nights™. You can catch up on seasons 1 & 2 now available on STARZ. more

Succumb to the Horrors of The Shining™ at Halloween Horror Nights 2017

It's time to enter Room 237.

By: Charles Gray

When bringing iconic horror films to life at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights, a common question we find ourselves asking is, “How the heck are we going to turn this movie into a haunted house?” But, hey—we're always up for a challenge.

This year is no different. We're bringing you The Shining™.

There are so many intense and creepy moments packed in the whole film. So we held hands, took a deep breath, and entered the Overlook Hotel.

I just finished looking at some of the house designs and am thrilled by the story we're telling. It will be the warped psychological thriller you know and love with our own Halloween Horror Nights twist.

We cast the Overlook Hotel as the aggressor and view it as if you have the “shining.” Our goal is to have you constantly doing a double take and give you that, “Did I just see that?” feeling.

After watching this movie for the first time I remember saying, “I would never go into room 237.” So, of course, that's where we're going to take you: all the places you shouldn't go.

You'll come face-to-face with the murderous, ghostly entities around every corner. And of course, the best part will be trying to escape the sharpened edge of an axe.

I can't wait for you all to see what's in store for you with The Shining™ and this year's event. You won't want to miss it, so make sure to grab your tickets now. more

American Horror Story Returns to Halloween Horror Nights 2017

The next chapter unfolds.

By: Michael Aiello

You've been patiently waiting for the first house reveal of Halloween Horror Nights 2017, and this one won't disappoint. I'm excited to announce we're bringing back FX's American Horror Story for a second year.

This all-new house will feature brand new content from Season 2: Asylum, Season 3: Coven and Season 6: Roanoke. And to really blow it out, we're using our largest floor plan—aka our uber-maze—to bring to life the three incredibly detailed seasons.

American Horror Story has some of the most intricate and intimidating characters I've ever seen. We've worked hard to once again bring this unique anthology to life, recreating the series with every turn of this maze.

In Asylum, travel through the decades of the notorious Briarcliff – evade Dr. Arden's grotesque human “Rasper"experiments and come face to “face” with the serial killer, Bloody Face.

New Orleans aesthetics will surround, as you're drawn into the wrath of descendants of the Salem witches and their unquenchable thirst for power in Coven.

And finally, relive the horrific story of the Millers in Roanoke – where you'll be at the mercy of Piggy, the grisly Polk family and the ghosts of the blood moon.

With the help of series creator Ryan Murphy and 20th Century Fox, we've perfectly captured the environments, moments and scares American Horror Story entails.

Halloween Horror Nights 2017 is going to be incredible and over the next several months you're going to be hearing from three talented (and equally twisted) members of my Creative Development Team, Show Directors Patrick Braillard, Charles Gray, and Blake Braswell. They will be announcing everything from houses to scare zones to show slates.

Halloween Horror Nights 2017 is shaping up to be one for the books, so stay tuned for more.

It's never too early to start panicking. Make sure to grab your tickets now, and I'll see you there! more
